Biography
Áron Tálas, winner of the Junior Prima, Gramophone and Artisjus awards, has been voted "Pianist of the Year" several times by readers of Hungarian jazz magazines. His versatility is well known: he has played drums with Lionel Loueke, piano with Jorge Rossy, and is a permanent member of the Mihály Borbély Quartet. As a soloist/composer, he has collaborated with the Danubia Orchestra, the Philharmonic Society Orchestra, and the Budapest Sound Collective in programs that straddle the boundary between classical and jazz.
He currently teaches at the jazz department of the Liszt Ferenc Academy of Music, but has also taught at Kodolányi János University and the Bartók Béla Secondary School of Music, and has held courses at the Academy of Music and Dance in Jerusalem.
His most important band, the Áron Tálas Trio, provides a space for him to deepen his compositional activities, which reveal influences from folk, classical, and various types of light music, alongside the harmonic and rhythmic elements of jazz. Despite this diversity, the overall picture is distinctive and unified. Critic Kornél Zipernovszky wrote the following about their first album released in Japan (Floating Island):
"There are many subtle references in Tálas's playing, but this is incidental. The point is that, beyond the virtuosity that is almost expected today, his originality, communicativeness, amazingly developed sense of form and musicality have produced something on this album that has a world of its own."
This world matured further on their album Little Beggar, released by BMC, which was named Hungarian jazz album of the year by Gramofon magazine in 2016. Both albums feature his own compositions.
"He brilliantly combines classical music elements with the unique rhythms and sudden tempo and pulse changes found in contemporary jazz. The lyrical side of his musical world is also strong, and the richness of his harmonies is magnificent. He is one of the most interesting personalities of his generation," wrote Balázs Bágyi about him.
The trio's third album, New Questions, Old Answers, was voted "Album of the Year" by the readers of jazz.hu. It was also selected as one of the best albums of 2024 by an international jazz radio station (33third.org).
He has also made a standard album with Jorge Rossy, best known from the Brad Mehldau Trio, and Danny Ziemann.
In addition to the trio albums, he has also released two solo albums: Beats From My Heart, which features a semi-electronic, modern groove sound, and a melancholic solo piano album entitled Blue Enough.
