Teaching Philosophy
Music is a human language; I teach by understanding the person first, so the music can become authentic.
Biography
VIOLINIST / MUSICIAN IN WELLNESS / CULTURAL BRIDGE BUILDER
Violinist Yuchen Zhao is a musician working at the intersection of performance, well-being, and public humanities. A graduate of the Bard Conservatory of Music, he currently serves as a violin fellow with The Orchestra Now (TŌN) in New York, an ensemble dedicated to reimagining the role of classical music within contemporary civic life.
Yuchen’s artistic work centers on the belief that music is not only an art form, but a medium for restoring attention, agency, and human connection. In addition to orchestral performance at major venues including Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center, he designs and facilitates music-integrated wellness programs in clinical and community settings. His projects have included reflective listening sessions combining live violin performance and visual art, adaptive performances for individuals with cognitive disabilities, and music-supported meditation and breath-centered practices in collaboration with wellness practitioners.
At Bard, Yuchen’s academic training in performance and curatorial studies deepened his focus on audience-centered experience design and the social responsibility of classical music. As Concertmaster of the Bard Conservatory Orchestra, he collaborated with Grammy Award–winning composer Tan Dun and developed a leadership approach grounded in attentive listening and nonverbal communication. With TŌN, he regularly participates in concert talks and public conversations, translating complex musical ideas into accessible and meaningful dialogue.
Beyond performance, Yuchen works as Content Director for Bard College’s China communications initiatives, articulating the philosophy of liberal arts education to international audiences. His cross-cultural experience informs his broader vision of music as a bridge between systems of thought — artistic, scientific, educational, and civic.
Aligned with the mission of the Altalena Music Festival, Yuchen is committed to cultivating environments in which music supports well-being, interdisciplinary dialogue, and the development of whole persons. His work seeks to reframe classical music not as a fixed tradition, but as a living practice capable of strengthening human presence in an increasingly fragmented world.
